Monica Willard

Monica Willard serves as the United Nations representative for the United Religions Initiative. She has worked with the UN Department of Public Information since 1997 to organize the annual student observance for the UN International Day of Peace. After hearing Jacqueline Murekatete share her Rwanda genocide story at a Prejudice Reduction Conference, Monica knew she wanted to help survivors. Jacqueline was invited to speak at the 2003 International Day of Peace at the United Nations where she was paired with Holocaust survivor, Nobel peace prize laureate and UN messenger of peace, Dr. Elie Wiesel.

From that success, the UN invited Jacqueline to be the voice of survivors in the UN General Assembly for the first observance of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide on April 7, 2004. Monica has continued to work with Jacqueline to support her efforts, those of other survivors and has also worked with the Office of Genocide Prevention at the UN on programs.
