Kwibuka 32

This coming Tuesday, April 7, marks the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This year marks 32 years since the genocide, during which more than one million innocent men, women, and children were brutally murdered solely because of their Tutsi ethnicity.

Each year, the 100-day period beginning on April 7 is observed as Kwibuka – which means “to remember” in Kinyarwanda. Kwibuka is not only a time of remembrance, but also a moment for reflection and renewed commitment.

It is a time to reflect on the devastating consequences of the ideology of genocide—an ideology that led to neighbors turning against neighbors, teachers against students, doctors against patients, and even faith leaders betraying those who sought refuge in places of worship. These atrocities serve as a stark reminder of how deeply dangerous hate, division, and dehumanization can become when left unchallenged.

As we mark Kwibuka 32, we are called to renew our commitment to preventing and stopping genocide and other mass atrocity crimes.

At a time when identity-based violence and global crises continue to rise, and as many communities confront increasing levels of hate and extremism, this year’s commemoration must also serve as a catalyst for action. It is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared humanity, to actively resist the forces of hatred and division, and to work collectively toward a world grounded in empathy, justice, and peaceful coexistence.
