Genocide Survivors Foundation was one of the sponsors of the first ever national reunion held in the US for survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Organized by Ibuka-USA, this important gathering took place in Salt Lake City, Utah from May 27 – May 29, 2022. The reunion brought together survivors from all over the United States, as well as from parts of Europe and Rwanda. The reunion was organized to allow survivors to observe the 28th commemoration of the genocide and to engage in a discussion of their healing journey, focused on both their successes and their remaining challenges.

Over the three-day period, the reunion featured talks and presentations from survivors as well as non-Rwandans who have worked to educate the world and preserve the memory of the Genocide over the past 28 years. The program of events included the performance of remembrance songs by well known Rwandan genocide commemoration artists, and many other commemorative activities.

As a partner organization, GSF provided financial support to this historic event. Moreover, our founder, Jacqueline Murekatete, assisted with planning the program for the reunion in her role as a member of Ibuka-USA. Ms. Murekatete also led a panel on the role of survivors’ nonprofit organizations in preserving the memory of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, educating the world about its historical facts, and in promoting the good well-being of genocide survivors.
