GSF Founder, Jacqueline Murekatete (with mic), speaks at the Kwibuka 31 program at the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations.
GSF participated in the Kwibuka 31 commemorative program organized by the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations in partnership with the Rwandan community of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
The event brought together diplomats, business leaders, genocide survivors, members of the Rwandan diaspora, and genocide prevention experts. Discussions focused on the root causes of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, lessons learned over the past three decades, and concrete ways individuals and institutions can confront genocide ideology, denial, and prevention failures worldwide.
We continued to amplify the voices and stories of genocide survivors through our online platforms, raising awareness about the dangers of racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and other forms of hate and extremism. These stories center our shared humanity and reinforce the urgent need to promote peaceful coexistence and solidarity across differences.
GSF provided tuition assistance, school supplies, and related educational support to six children of genocide survivors in Rwanda, helping ensure access to education and greater long-term stability.
“My name is Consantine and I was the only survivor in my family after the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994. My whole family was killed, and I survived with many injuries to my head. I want to thank Genocide Survivors Foundation (GSF) because after its founder Jacqueline learned of my problems, GSF started paying for my kids’ tuition which reduced my trauma. As a single mother battling chronic illnesses as result of my experience in the Genocide, I was worried about how my kids would go to school but thanks to GSF they are able to study at a very good school now.” – Constantine (Survivor)
We provided ongoing financial assistance to meet the basic daily needs of two women survivors in Rwanda who have been bedridden since 1994 as a result of severe physical injuries sustained during the genocide.
GSF provided seed funding to one genocide survivor to launch a small income-generating business focused on buying and selling cassava flour, supporting self-reliance and dignity through sustainable livelihood opportunities.
“My name is Daphrose and I live in Kigali Rwanda. I want to start with a prayer for GSF supporters. I want to thank GSF because you have helped me to go from one place in my life to another. When I first learned about GSF and its work through a dear friend, I was very sick and had a niece who was not studying because I did not have the means to support her studies. GSF then started paying for my niece’s tuition and gave me some financial support to start a small business buying and selling cassava flour. Because of this small business, I am now able to pay for my basic needs and help some of my family members. Because of the support received from GSF, I am also able to manage my pain and trauma from the Genocide as I see that my life is improving. I want to thank GSF again so much and hope you will continue to have the means to support other survivors. God bless you.” – Daphrose (Survivor)
We provided financial support for critical medical care for one woman genocide survivor addressing chronic physical illnesses stemming from sexual violence endured during the genocide.
The following are a few brief messages of gratitude from some of the genocide survivors and children of survivors in Rwanda – made possible through your continued support.
“Dear Genocide Survivors Foundation, I want to say thank you for helping me to get my university degree. I am so grateful for achieving this dream of mine. I was nowhere before but now I see a bright future in coming days. Also being able to receive a university degree changed my mentality and taught me to think big and look outside the box. Now, I am looking forward to more achievements in my life. Thank you again and God bless you. – Janvier (Child of survivors)
“I want to thank Genocide Survivors Foundation donors and supporters for their help in managing my medical needs which resulted from the genocide as well as helping with other daily basic needs for me and my family. The life we led before GSF’s support was very difficult and we thank you from the bottom of our heart and ask God to bless GSF’s supporters. We love you and you are always in our hearts and prayers.” – Veneranda (Survivor)
